Five Signs You Have a German Cockroach Infestation and What You Can Do About It

German cockroaches are one of the most persistent and unsanitary pests that can invade a home. Small, fast and highly reproductive, this species thrives in warm, humid environments and quickly takes over kitchens, bathrooms and any place where food and moisture are available. Because they multiply rapidly and can spread harmful bacteria, identifying an infestation early is crucial for protecting your home and your health.

Below are the top five signs you may have a German cockroach infestationโ€”and why professional pest prevention is the most effective way to stop them.

1. Youโ€™re Seeing German Cockroachesโ€”Especially During the Day

While spotting any roach is unsettling, seeing German cockroaches is a strong indicator that a population is already established. These pests are typically active at night so daytime sightings can signal a large and growing infestation.

German cockroaches are smallโ€”usually ยฝ to โ… inch longโ€”with two dark stripes behind the head. Their slim, flat bodies make it easy for them to hide inside tiny cracks, behind appliances and inside cabinets. Because they reproduce so quickly, even a few visible roaches can mean dozens more are hiding out of sight.

2. Pepper-Like Droppings in Kitchen or Bathroom Areas

German cockroach droppings resemble fine, dark specks, often compared to black pepper or coffee grounds. You may find them:

โ€ข In kitchen drawers and cabinets
โ€ข Along baseboards
โ€ข Near appliances like stoves, dishwashers and refrigerators
โ€ข Around food storage or prep areas

These droppings are not only unpleasantโ€”they can also trigger allergies, worsen asthma symptoms and contaminate surfaces where food is handled.

3. Discovering Egg Cases

Female German cockroaches produce Oothecaeโ€”small, brown, capsule-like egg cases that contain 30โ€“40 eggs each. They often tuck these cases into protected spaces such as:

โ€ข Deep cracks or gaps
โ€ข Under sinks
โ€ข In cluttered storage areas
โ€ข Inside cardboard boxes or grocery bags

Finding just one ootheca is a red flag. Because cockroaches mature quicklyโ€”often in under 100 daysโ€”a few unnoticed egg cases can turn into a full-blown infestation.

4. A Musty or Oily Odor

A persistent, unpleasant smell is another common sign of a German cockroach problem. As populations grow, they produce a distinct musty, oily odor caused by pheromones, droppings and secretions. Severe infestations may even leave this scent lingering in cabinets, behind appliances or in rooms where roaches are active.

If your home suddenly develops a foul, unfamiliar smellโ€”especially in warm, humid spacesโ€”itโ€™s wise to investigate further.

5. Spotting Nymphs (Young Cockroaches)

Nymphs are smaller, wingless versions of adult German cockroaches. If youโ€™re seeing tiny brown roaches, particularly in kitchens or bathrooms, it means cockroaches are actively breeding inside your home.

The presence of nymphs indicates that the infestation is not coming from outsideโ€”itโ€™s thriving indoors in hidden nesting areas.

How German Cockroaches Get Inside Your Home

These pests are resourceful and frequently enter homes by hitchhiking in:

โ€ข Grocery bags
โ€ข Cardboard boxes
โ€ข Used appliances
โ€ข Storage containers

Once indoors, they gravitate to warm, moist environments where food or crumbs are readily available. Poor sanitationโ€”like leaving dirty dishes out, allowing spills to sit or storing unsealed foodโ€”can accelerate their spread. Even the cleanest homes however are at risk because German cockroaches are incredibly resilient scavengers.

Why German Cockroach Infestations Are So Difficult to Remove

German cockroaches reproduce faster than most other household pests. Theyโ€™re also skilled at avoiding danger by hiding deep inside walls, gaps and appliances. Their ability to adapt, survive in harsh conditions and feed on nearly anything makes them one of the hardest pests to eliminate without professional help.

They are also known carriers of bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, both of which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.

How to Prevent German Cockroaches

Simple preventive steps can make a significant difference, including:

โ€ข Fixing leaky pipes and removing standing water.
โ€ข Sealing cracks, gaps and openings around the home.
โ€ข Cleaning up crumbs, spills and food debris promptly.
โ€ข Properly sealing garbage cans.
โ€ข Removing clutter, especially cardboard.
โ€ข Cleaning up dead roaches that may attract others.

While these habits help reduce the chances of an infestation, they cannot eliminate established populations hiding in walls or hard-to-reach areas.

Massey Services German Cockroach Treatment Prep Checklist

To ensure your German cockroach service is effective, your home must be properly prepared before treatment. Below, youโ€™ll find our detailed prep checklist outlining what homeowners should complete beforehand, what technicians do during service, and what to expect after treatment.

Before the Service: Customer Preparation

Complete the following steps before your technician arrives:

  • Remove all items from kitchen cabinets and drawers. Discard anything that cannot be cleaned or may be infested.
  • Vacuum cabinets and drawers to eliminate dead roaches, which can act as a food source for surviving pests.
  • Clean cabinets, counters and drawers with warm, soapy water to remove food residue roaches may feed on.
  • Clean grease, crumbs and food buildup from under and behind the stove, including the sides and beneath the burners.
  • Store all food in sealed containers to eliminate competing food sources that reduce bait effectiveness.
  • Feed pets only the amount of food they will consume and remove any leftovers, as unconsumed pet food attracts roaches.
  • Vacuum or sweep the rest of the home to remove food debris and dead roaches. If roaches are present in other rooms, remove items from closets or cabinets, vacuum inside, then return items once clean.

If preparation is not completed, your technician will note what is missing and reschedule the service.

During the Service: What Your Technician Will Do

Once preparation is complete, your Massey Services technician will:

  • Treat infested areas and identify additional points of concern.
  • Place baits and/or sticky Insect Detection Traps (IDTs) inside and behind cabinets and appliances.
  • Provide written recommendations to help prevent future infestations.

After the Service: What Homeowners Should Do

To support the treatment and prevent re-infestation:

  • Stay out of treated areas until counters, floors and surfaces are dry. Afterward, wash all food-contact surfaces with soapy water and rinse with clean water.
  • Vacuum or clean up dead roaches daily, including inside cabinets, drawers and along baseboards.
  • Store food in sealed containers and empty trash daily.
  • Keep sinks, counters and floors free of food debris. Be sure dishes are washed and removed from the sink each night.
  • Avoid disturbing any bait placements. They must remain in place for several weeks to work effectively.

Because German cockroach egg cases continue to hatch over time, light activity may still occur for the first few weeks. This is normalโ€”newly emerged roaches will contact treated surfaces and die. If you do not see a reduction in activity after two weeks, Massey Services will return at no additional cost.

Think You Have a German Cockroach Infestation?

The sooner you identify and treat a roach problem the easier it is to get under control. If youโ€™ve noticed any of these five signsโ€”or if you simply want peace of mindโ€”contact Massey Services for a thorough inspection and customized treatment plan that keeps your home protected year-round.
