Why Are Termites Attracted to Homes?

Termites are constantly searching for food and moisture—and certain conditions around your home can make it more appealing to them. Even if you have professional termite protection in place, reducing common risk factors can help strengthen your home’s defense against potential termite activity.

Common Conditions That Attract Termites:

- Poor drainage that allows water to collect near your foundation
- Wood-to-soil contact, such as wooden siding, decks, or fence posts touching the ground
- Excess moisture around your property from leaks, clogged gutters or standing water

Helpful Homeowner Tips to Reduce Termite Risk

  • Improve drainage around your home to prevent water buildup
  • Keep gutters and downspouts clean and direct water away from the foundation
  • Repair leaking faucets, pipes and irrigation systems promptly
  • Maintain a gap between soil and any wooden structures whenever possible
  • Regularly inspect crawl spaces, basements and exterior wood for signs of moisture

Protect Your Home Year-Round

Professional termite protection is an important line of defense, but prevention starts with maintaining a termite-unfriendly environment. By addressing moisture issues, improving drainage and minimizing wood-to-soil contact, you can help keep your home protected and reduce the likelihood of termite activity throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a termite infestation?

A termite infestation occurs when termites invade and establish a colony within your home or property. These pests can cause significant damage to structures as they silently feed on wood, often leaving behind complex nests. Infestations are commonly recognized by the presence of swarmers and discarded wings, indicating that termites are actively breeding and expanding their colony. A proactive approach in inspecting your home regularly, especially the exterior walls and damp locations, helps in early detection of termite activities. Ignoring early warning signs can lead to extensive damage and severely affect the structural integrity of homes.

How much damage can termites cause and how quickly?

The extent of termite damage depends largely on the size and maturity of the colony. A small colony of 60,000 termites can consume approximately one square foot of wood in about a month, but that’s just the beginning. Moderate to large colonies, which may include millions of termites, can cause severe structural damage in two to three years or less. In extreme cases, large colonies can render a home uninhabitable in under two years. Because termite damage can go unnoticed until it's extensive, it’s much more cost-effective to prevent it than to repair it.
