Tropical Storm Fay Brings Increased Mosquito Breeding
Take a quick look around your neighborhood and you will likely see pools of water that will stand for days, if not weeks, to come. That’s because Tropical Storm Fay brought devastating floodwaters that not only damaged homes, but also created an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
This increased mosquito population will certainly make outdoor work and play more uncomfortable for you and your family. More than just a nuisance, though, mosquitoes are also transmitters of West Nile Virus and other harmful illnesses. However, a few simple precautions can help you reduce your risk of contracting a mosquito-born illness:
- Avoid working or playing outdoors at dawn or dusk since this is the time when you are most likely to be bitten by a mosquito.
- If you must be out, be sure to wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt and apply an insect repellent containing D.E.E.T.
- Remove water from bird baths, wading pools, potted plants, or anything that can collect and hold stagnant water for extended periods of time.
- Hire a professional to inspect and treat your property for mosquitoes.
At Massey Services, our Mosquito Abatement Program will identify any mosquito breeding areas on your property and either remove the water source or apply an environmentally-responsible material to prevent the growth and development of larvae in that area. We then treat the exterior of your home, areas of dense vegetation where mosquitoes may rest, as well as the perimeter of your property. Our program helps minimize flying mosquitoes that threaten you, your pets, and your children.
