Did you know these fun facts about Halloween?

In the spirit of the holiday this weekend, below are a few fun facts about Halloween and some symbols associated with Halloween:

  • Jack o’ lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday, a pagan holiday celebrated on Oct. 31 (the last day of the Celtic calendar). They also wore masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as humans by the spirits and ghosts that supposedly roamed the countryside on Halloween night.
  • If you see a spider on Halloween, it is said to be the spirit of a loved one watching over you.
  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers at number one.
  • Halloween is the second-most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first.
  • Black cats were once believed to be witch’s familiars who protected their powers.
  • Signs of a werewolf are a unibrow, hairy palms, tattoos and a long middle finger.
  • There really are so-called vampire bats, but they’re not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds. But the common little brown bat of North America has the longest life span for a mammal its size, with a life span averaging 32 years.
  • The movie “Halloween” was made in only 21 days in 1978 on a very limited budget. The movie was shot in the spring so they had to use fake autumn leaves.
